AN OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, MR. THORBJØRN JAGLAND, AND PROMOTION OF THE REPORT LIVING TOGETHER: COMBINING DIVERSITY AND FREEDOM IN 21ST CENTURY EUROPE

The Council of Europe Secretary General, Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, during his official visit to Serbia presented the report Living Together: Combining Diversity and Freedom in 21st century Europe, in the House of the National Assembly Small Hall on March 12th 2012. This report was made by the group of nine eminent persons who looked back at nowadays alarming phenomenon such as intolerance increase, discrimination, population without any rights, parallel societies, democratic freedoms loss, asylum seekers’ problems and many others, wrote certain advices and recommendations to all the actors who can influence on changes in people behavior and understanding.

This Report, which has many good practices examples from different European countries, is a starting point for opening a dialogue among academic youth in round tables on Faculties in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis, and which will be organized within CIVIS’s project Living in Diversity and Benefit from It,which is being implemented in a cooperation with the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade. Students will have an opportunity to discuss on various topics with prominent experts, which Mrs. Bojana Mazarak Popovic, the CIVIS’s Secretary General, announced on that occasion in the National Assembly.

The aim of this project, which was inspired by the Report different information, is to raise young people awareness so they could understand the importance of respect and human rights protection, as well as the opportunity to express their own opinions and hear some different opinions from their peers and experts also regarding modern world ongoing topics.

The project is supported by the Embassy of the Swiss Confederation.
